Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Our BJJ Classes
At Mata BJJ, we know starting something new can feel a bit daunting, so here are some quick answers to help you feel ready for your first class.
It’s best to arrive a little early to get changed and get comfortable in the space.
For your first few classes, wear:
- A t-shirt
- Athletic shorts, board shorts, leggings, or sweatpants
- Avoid clothing with pockets, zippers, or belt loops, as they can cause discomfort or injury.
If you decide to keep training, you’ll need a Jiu-Jitsu Gi:
Monday and Friday are Gi classes (but no need to buy one right away).Once you know BJJ is for you, chat with the instructor for guidance on sizes, brands, and where to buy.
Wednesday is No-Gi, so just wear shorts and a t-shirt (or rash guard).
And don’t forget a bottle of water — BJJ is thirsty work!
Each class is 1.5 hours and follows a simple structure:
- Warm-Up (20–30 mins) – Movement drills and conditioning exercises.
- Technique Practice (35 mins) – The instructor demonstrates techniques, and you’ll pair up to drill them.
- Sparring (“Rolling”) – Live, controlled grappling rounds where you can apply what you’ve learned.
You’ll train at your own pace, with guidance and support throughout.
Not at all! You don’t need to be in great shape to start.Training regularly will naturally build your fitness, strength, and mobility over time.
Absolutely. Every class is beginner-friendly and open to all levels.
If you’re new, we recommend starting with our Fundamentals Class on Friday evenings (6:30–8:00pm). These sessions focus on core techniques and movements perfect for building confidence and a strong foundation.
